“This media we call social is anything but, when we open our computers and it’s our doors we shut”
Look Up is a spoken word for the “online” generation. Written, performed and directed by Gary Turk, it is an extremely important life lesson for our youth. Children are growing up in a world where they don’t play outside or communicate with their friends. It seems today everything is done via text message or over the internet. It’s heartbreaking… I feel guilty myself. I know I get so wrapped up in my phone with showing everyone what I just did that night or the day before and hoping others appreciate it by liking the picture, tweet, or post. I have known this has been a huge problem in society today for a long time and will keep trying to put my phone down more. It is truly amazing how much you miss out on when you are on your phone. I find myself saying “wait, I missed it!” or “what did you say? Sorry, I was distracted.” This is so wrong and everyday I think more about how I should stay in the present, off my phone, and start listening to people because we all have something important to say. Society has changed everyone for the worst through self-image, self-esteem, and seeing who can get the most likes. Stay off your phone for a day, it will seriously change your view on social media.
