Leadership Advancement Scholarship

LAS scholarships are awarded to 40 high school seniors who has shown leadership in our schools and communities. We must have a minimum, cumulative high school GPA of 3.00. The value of the scholarship is $2000 per academic year and is renewable for three years if a 2.75 cumulative GPA and full-time continuous enrollment are maintained.

When I first applied and after competition day, I felt like there was no way I could receive such a high-rewarding scholarship. Within a couple of weeks, I got the call from Dan Gaken with the great news! I couldn’t believe it and felt like I was on top of the world! I immediately realized that I would have to take required leadership classes, gain more volunteer hours here, and join a club. This wasn’t any scholarship where you get the money as easy as keeping your GPA up. But I figured out this scholarship is more than just financial aid. It was my welcoming aid into a new chapter in my life. I had gained 40 friends without realizing it and most lived in Barnes Hall with me. Three of which are my roommates which makes life that much easier! On top of all this amazing reality hitting me, I met my mentor, Kayla Phillips. This girl has already made such a huge impact in my life and already feels like a sister to me. She has helped me with every question I have, she has been there for me through all my ups and downs, and we have so much in common its unreal! I know we will be those two old ladies drinking coffee in a shop, remembering every crazy thing we did when we were this age; and I have the Leadership Advancement Scholarship to thank. Every single LASer has a wonderful heart ready to help with the community and make the most out of their CMU career just as much as I plan on doing. I have already gained so much leadership and volunteer experience, and have so much more to come!
